 Nutcracker on Ice

The 3rd Annual production of "Nutcracker on Ice" was presented by the Greenwood Skating Club in December 2007. All members of the Greenwood Skating Club from CanSkaters to senior StarSkaters and AdultSkaters are assigned a role to play in this ice skating adaptation of a timeless classic.

The Karen Norman Memorial Skate was inaugurated in 1993 after the untimely death of Karen at age 23.  Karen started skating with our Club when she was five years old and progressed through our various programs winning many medals.  She was the first skater in our Club to attain Gold Level in Dance.  At that time, no other skater in our Club had reached Gold level status in any discipline.  In 1983, Karen was selected to represent Nova Scotia in the Novice Singles at the Canada Winter Games being held in Lac St. Jean, Quebec.  While attending Acadia University in 1988, Karen coached the Middleton Precision (synchronized) Team, which competed in the Canadian National Championships held in Toronto.  Karen coached in Greenwood, Kentville, Middleton, and Wolfville.  She was always available to help young skaters and pass on her knowledge of skating.  Her smile and enthusiasm were contagious and it was only fitting that our Club honour her memory by introducing novice skaters to the world of competition.

The funding for this FUNSKATE originally came from the Norman Family.  They donate the Club Trophy to be presented each year to the Club whose skaters have accumulated the most points by placing in the top four in all events. Every year members of the Norman Family help with the competition.  Her parents, Mary and Brian, look forward to the FUNSKATE every year and hope all the competitors have as much fun skating as Karen did.

This SKATE is self-supporting and offers our skaters an opportunity to compete against their peers in the spirit of skating.
